World’s Most Popular Blog Picks Up on TSA Scandal

Posted in: U.S. Homeland Security

mike-restovich.jpgBoing Boing, ranked "the most popular blog in the world" by Technorati.com picked up on the article I wrote yesterday for Pajamas Media and asks the question Congress needs to ask:

TSA officials running illegal private consultancy?

Posted by Cory Doctorow, March 16, 2008 12:33 AM | permalink

Two top TSA officials — both decorated by the administration for excellence — have been in alleged violation of the TSA's rules, operating a private security consultancy while drawing a government salary and holding top secret clearance. The TSA has stonewalled on the issue, refusing to issue a statement or talk to the press. One of the men, Michael Restovich, never showed up at a Congressional hearing into why he seemed to be encouraging TSA checkpoints to cheat on spot-tests of their efficacy at catching bombs — instead, Restovich was hastily dispatched overseas to be the DHS attaché to the United Kingdom.

Pajamas Media has learned that Michael “Mike” Restovich and fellow TSA senior executive Morris “Mo” McGowan ran a private security consulting company while working as high-ranking officials with TSA…

No wonder TSA is in Sunday evening damage control.

On its blog, TSA tries wriggling into the dubious position that "any TSA employee can operate a private business as long as it doesn't benefit from his government position."

Not according to at least three sections of TSA's HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT POLICY MANUAL, LETTER NO. 735-1 — the employee can't.

Here's yet another paragraph that pertains:

"While off-duty, employees are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that does not adversely reflect on the TSA or negatively impact its ability to discharge its mission, cause embarrassment to the agency, or cause the public and/or supervisors to question the employee’s reliability, judgment or trustworthiness. Employees shall not use the power or influence of their office or position for their own personal advantage or the advantage of others."

Does the fact that TSA Officials Mike Restovich (photo above at right) and Morris "Mo" McGowan (photo below left) ran a private consulting business while serving as top-salaried TSA officials cause you — the public — to question their reliability, judgment and trustworthiness? How about TSA as a whole?

Think about it and decide. Type Congress.org into your search engine. Add your zip code. Find out who represents you. Send your Congressperson an email asking them to look into it

I want to learn how to put my own pictures on my blog. I also want to know how to put my own kind of style as my backround.
